An afternoon at College Estate Park turned into a scene of chaos on Sunday when a 28 year old man opened fire after a heated argument.
Oxnard police rushed to the park just before 2:30 p.m. to find a 24 year old victim bleeding from a gunshot wound.
Investigators say a simple disagreement between the two men spiraled out of control before the older man pulled a gun and fired multiple rounds at the victim.
The shooter attempted to ditch the evidence but police swarmed the scene and did not just find the handgun used in the shooting but several other weapons as well.
Thanks to witnesses who stepped up and pointed him out to arriving officers the 28 year old was taken into custody without a fight.
The victim is currently in a local hospital recovering and authorities state there is no further threat to the public.
College Estate Park is located in a residential area near several schools making the broad daylight violence particularly concerning for local families.
While Oxnard has seen a general decrease in violent crime over the last year this incident highlights the ongoing issue of illegal firearms in public spaces.
The 28 year old suspect is facing multiple felony charges including attempted murder and possession of unregistered firearms.
Police are continuing to interview witnesses to determine the exact nature of the argument that preceded the gunfire.
Does this make you wonder if anywhere is truly safe on a Sunday afternoon when multiple guns are found at a public park?
