A federal judge has officially dismissed the defamation lawsuit filed by political activist Laura Loomer against comedian Bill Maher and HBO.

The legal challenge centered on comments made by Maher during a September 2024 broadcast of his program, "Real Time."

During the episode, Maher made a satirical suggestion regarding the nature of the relationship between Loomer and former President Donald Trump.

U.S. District Judge James Moody Jr. issued the ruling on Wednesday, stating that the remarks constituted protected speech rather than actionable defamation.

The court determined that a reasonable viewer would have understood the comments as a joke within the context of a late-night comedy show.

Judge Moody emphasized that the First Amendment provides significant leeway for satire and rhetorical hyperbole, especially concerning public figures.

Loomer had alleged that the comedian's statements damaged her professional reputation and resulted in lost employment opportunities.

However, the judge found that Loomer failed to provide evidence of "actual malice," which is the legal standard required for public figures to prove defamation.

The ruling noted there was no indication Maher knowingly broadcasted false information with intent to harm.

Furthermore, the court highlighted that Loomer did not demonstrate any concrete financial or reputational damages resulting from the broadcast.

Evidence presented during the proceedings suggested that Loomer’s income actually increased in 2024 compared to previous years.

The judge also pointed out that Loomer maintained her access to high-level political circles and continued to interact with the former president.

In response to the dismissal, Loomer issued a statement criticizing the decision as factually incorrect and legally flawed.

She characterized the ruling as "dishonest" and indicated her intention to appeal the case to a higher court.

Legal experts noted that the case highlights the high bar set for defamation claims involving political commentary and public personalities.

The decision reinforces existing legal precedents that protect comedians and media outlets from lawsuits over satirical content.

HBO, which is owned by Warner Bros. Discovery, was also a defendant in the suit and saw the claims against it dismissed as well.

This outcome marks a significant victory for late-night hosts who frequently use satire to discuss current political events and figures.

As the legal process continues, the focus will likely shift to the appellate courts to see if the initial ruling is upheld.
