Ghislaine Maxwell has initiated a fresh legal effort to overturn her sex trafficking conviction and secure her release from federal prison. The longtime associate of the late Jeffrey Epstein is currently serving a 20-year sentence following her high-profile trial in New York.
Maxwell submitted her latest request personally, delivering an amended motion and various exhibits via a USB drive sent to federal prosecutors. According to court documents, the package was received by the government and reported to the district court on Monday morning.
This new filing follows the exhaustion of Maxwell’s direct appeals, including a recent refusal by the U.S. Supreme Court to hear her case. Her legal team previously argued that the conviction should be dismissed based on a controversial 2008 non-prosecution agreement.
The current motion builds upon a habeas petition filed late last year, which claims that substantial new evidence has come to light. This evidence reportedly stems from the Justice Department's release of documents related to the broader investigation into Epstein’s activities.
A federal judge previously granted Maxwell permission to amend her petition to include information from these newly unsealed files. Prosecutors noted that the new arguments seem to overlap with previous motions rejected by both district and appellate courts.
Maxwell was convicted of aiding and participating in a scheme to recruit and groom underage girls for abuse by Epstein. The government maintained that she played a central role in a system designed to exploit minors as young as 14 years old.
Throughout her legal battles, Maxwell has maintained that her trial was unfair and that the allegations against her were overly vague. She specifically challenged the legal definition of grooming used during the proceedings, though these claims were consistently dismissed.
In addition to her legal filings, Maxwell recently participated in an interview where she discussed her past social circles. She reportedly stated that she never witnessed any inappropriate behavior by former President Donald Trump during their shared interactions.
The court must now decide whether the new arguments presented in the USB drive warrant a formal hearing or further judicial review. Maxwell remains incarcerated in a federal facility while the legal process regarding her amended petition continues to unfold.
