Authorities in Minnesota have filed felony charges against a 39-year-old man, Mukeshkumar Somabhai Chaudhari, for allegedly registering to vote and casting a ballot in the 2024 election despite not holding U.S. citizenship. Chaudhari faces counts of perjury and a voting violation following an investigation into his eligibility.

According to court records, Chaudhari registered to vote in 2023 and subsequently submitted a ballot in the 2024 general election. Investigators report that while Chaudhari initially denied voting, he later admitted to the act, characterizing it as a "mistake." He reportedly informed authorities that he only realized his ineligibility after consulting with a lawyer during his green card application process. Officials believe his voter registration notice may have been automatically triggered after he obtained a Minnesota driver’s license.

The Minnesota Secretary of State’s office emphasized that only U.S. citizens are eligible to vote and noted that such instances are extremely rare. The office highlighted that voters must attest to their eligibility multiple times, and those who violate these laws face severe consequences, including potential deportation, prison time, and significant fines.

The incident has intensified the ongoing political debate regarding election security in Minnesota. Republican lawmakers and policy analysts have pointed to the case as evidence of vulnerabilities within the state's current system. Critics, including State Representative Pam Altendorf, argue that recent legislative changes—such as providing driver’s licenses to noncitizens and allowing "vouching" for residency—have weakened safeguards.

Conversely, Democratic officials maintain that existing protocols are effective at identifying and prosecuting the few instances of ineligible voting that occur. This case arrives as national discussions continue over the SAVE America Act, a Republican-led initiative aimed at tightening voter ID requirements and citizenship verification. As the legal proceedings against Chaudhari move forward, the case remains a focal point for those advocating for stricter oversight of the registration and voting process in the state.
