San Francisco City Hall was illuminated in blue and white on Tuesday, April 21, 2026, to celebrate Israel’s 78th Independence Day, known as Yom Ha'atzmaut.
The landmark lighting followed a somber Memorial Day (Yom HaZikaron) and coincided with the official torch-lighting ceremony held at Mount Herzl in Jerusalem. On Thursday, the Israeli Consulate General to the Pacific Northwest shared photos of the display, offering a public thank-you to San Francisco city officials for the symbolic gesture.
The lighting is part of a long-standing municipal tradition where San Francisco uses themed LED displays to honor national holidays of allied countries and recognize significant cultural causes.
According to the city’s official lighting schedule, the building has also recently featured colors for the National Day of Greece, World Parkinson’s Day, and San Francisco Climate Week.
However, the display has become a flashpoint for intense debate. The Consulate’s post quickly drew over 1,300 replies, reflecting a sharp divide among residents and online observers.
While many praised the recognition of diplomatic ties, critics voiced strong opposition, questioning the city’s decision to take a public stance amid ongoing Middle East conflicts and fragile ceasefires.
