A Riverside County SWAT deputy is facing a firestorm of criticism after aerial footage caught him apparently scrolling through a dating app while an armed suspect was barricaded just feet away.
The incident, which occurred on April 8, 2026, in Jurupa Valley, has been labeled a "slap in the face" by Sheriff Chad Bianco.
The high-stakes operation began after a high-speed pursuit involving a white Cadillac ended in a crash near a local school.
As SWAT teams surrounded the vehicle with BearCat armored trucks, a deputy, identified by the "SGT" patch on his vest as a supervisor, was filmed by a news chopper casually swiping through profiles.
While his teammates used robots, drones, and pepper balls to negotiate with the armed suspect, the sergeant was seen swiping left multiple times on his smartphone.
Sheriff Bianco did not hold back in his assessment, stating he was "shocked," "embarrassed," and "angry" when he saw the viral clip.
"That is not representative of my department," Bianco told reporters.
He emphasized that the behavior was "intolerable" in a line of work where life-and-death decisions are made in seconds.
The standoff ultimately ended in tragedy when the suspect was found dead from a self-inflicted gunshot wound.
While the department has launched a formal internal investigation, the video has already racked up millions of views, with commenters mocking the officer with lines like, "Crime is temporary, but romance is forever."
The Sheriff’s Office has confirmed that accountability is coming for the sergeant, whose "multitasking" has now put his career on the line.
As of April 18, the officer remains on leave pending the results of the probe.
