A deeply disturbing case unfolding in the United Kingdom is drawing national attention as prosecutors lay out allegations surrounding the death of a 13-month-old child.

Former teacher Jamie Varley, 37, is on trial alongside his partner John McGowan-Fazakerley, 32, in connection with the 2023 death of toddler Preston Davey.

According to prosecutors, Preston was described as a “perfectly healthy boy” before being placed in the couple’s care in April 2023. He was just under 10 months old at the time.

The couple, from Blackpool, were initially seen as stable and suitable adoptive parents. But prosecutors now argue that appearance masked a far darker reality.

Just three months later, in July 2023, Preston was rushed to Blackpool Victoria Hospital after going into cardiac arrest.

He was pronounced dead within the hour.

What followed shifted the case dramatically.

A post-mortem examination revealed that Preston’s death was caused by smothering, specifically acute upper airway obstruction. Medical experts also documented around 40 separate injuries, including dozens of bruises and a fractured arm.

Some injuries, prosecutors say, were consistent with forceful handling, including marks aligned with gripping the child’s head and strikes to his body.

The courtroom has also heard allegations that go beyond physical abuse.

Prosecutor Peter Wright told the court that images and videos were found showing the child in visible distress on the day of his death. In one instance, the toddler allegedly appeared to be struggling to breathe while lying on a bed.

Another video presented in court reportedly shows the child left unattended in a bath for an extended period while being filmed.

Authorities allege that many of the acts occurred while McGowan-Fazakerley was at work, placing primary responsibility on Varley for the direct abuse.

Both men have denied all charges.

Varley faces multiple counts, including murder, manslaughter, sexual assault of a child, and creating indecent images. McGowan-Fazakerley is charged with allowing the death of a child, child cruelty, and sexual assault, all of which he also denies.

The case is now being closely followed across the UK, raising serious questions about child safeguarding, adoption vetting processes, and oversight mechanisms.

At its core, the trial centers on a devastating claim.

That a child placed into what was meant to be a safe home instead encountered prolonged harm, only uncovered when it was too late.

The court proceedings are ongoing.
