A massive wave of outrage is hitting the Mecklenburg County court system today after a judge drastically reduced the bond for a self-identified gang member whose actions led to the death of an unborn child.

Luis Alfonzo Marcano-Marcano, 41, a known member of the violent Venezuelan gang Tren de Aragua, walked out of jail this week after his $1 million bond was slashed to a mere $25,000.

The incident began on April 12, 2026, during a drunken birthday argument at Marcano-Marcano’s home in Mint Hill.

According to police affidavits, the suspect fired his pistol into the ground near his pregnant wife’s feet to intimidate her.

When he set the gun down, his wife, attempting to stop him from shooting further, tried to put the weapon in her pocket. The gun discharged, shooting her in the stomach and killing her 7-month-old unborn baby.

After dropping his wounded wife at the hospital, Marcano-Marcano allegedly returned home to dispose of the evidence by throwing the pistol into the woods.

While he was initially hit with a $1 million bond for being a "danger to the public," Judge Karen McCallum intervened on April 14, lowering the amount by 97.5%.

The decision has left local law enforcement and the community stunned. Marcano-Marcano is not only a member of a gang the U.S. Justice Department has labeled a foreign terrorist organization, but he also has active warrants in Venezuela.

Records show that the suspect posted the reduced bond and was released from the Mecklenburg County Jail on Wednesday.

While ICE had placed a detainer on him, it remains unclear if federal agents were able to intercept him before he disappeared back into the community.
