The Ventura County DA’s Instagram is absolute chaos right now. Every post they put up is getting buried under hundreds of "Justice for Makayla" comments from people who are terrified the system is about to drop the ball.

Here is the reality of what happened at the courthouse on Tuesday: Stephen Vincent Chavez was technically present for his Early Disposition Conference, but for the crowds outside, it felt like a ghost show. Chavez is currently out of custody after posting a $250,000 bond, and while protesters chanted on the sidewalk, he was likely tucked away in a side room with his legal team.

Many supporters were hoping for a major breakthrough or a "guilty" plea, but an Early Disposition Conference is essentially a standard legal phase where both sides trade evidence and discuss potential deals.

The case wasn't "pushed back" for no reason, it is moving toward the Preliminary Hearing, which is now officially set for May 19, 2026.

The massive hurdle remains: the star witness, Makayla Rene Settles, is no longer here to testify. While her family insists there is solid DNA evidence from a forensic exam, California law typically gives a defendant the right to confront their accuser in person.

Without her on the stand, the defense is likely trying to run out the clock or argue that the evidence is insufficient for a trial.

The District Attorney’s Office released a statement claiming they are prosecuting the case "to the fullest extent of the law" and seeking a state prison sentence.

However, the family remains worried that without a trial, the system might look for an easy out.
