The Simi Valley Police Department is seeing its months of meticulous investigative work undermined by a legal system that is handing a convicted child predator an early ticket home.

Nathan Kealohakeali'i Kim, who was recently nailed for a series of horrific crimes against a minor, is already scheduled for release in May 2028.

Kim’s conviction included nine felony counts that have sent shockwaves through the community, including lewd acts with a child, oral copulation of a minor, and sexual penetration with a foreign object.

Prosecutors noted the crimes were particularly "sickening" because Kim allegedly used an abuse of trust to target and manipulate a vulnerable victim, effectively destroying a child's life.

Despite the gravity of these charges and Kim's existing status on the Megan’s Law sex offender registry, California’s sentencing credit system is slashing his time behind bars.

Because of how state laws calculate "time served" and conduct credits, Kim is set to serve only a fraction of his original sentence. The state is essentially opening the prison doors to let a high-risk predator back into the neighborhood in just 24 months.

The Simi Valley PD did the heavy lifting to get Kim off the streets, but the reality of his 2028 release date has left the local community in a state of outrage. Critics of the current system argue that cases involving "abuse of trust" and multiple violent felonies against children should be exempt from early release credits, yet the law continues to favor shorter stays for those who have caused irreparable harm.
