17 Americans anxiously awaiting evacuation from hantavirus cruise ship

Seventeen American citizens currently stranded aboard the MV Hondius cruise ship are preparing for an imminent evacuation to a specialized quarantine facility in Nebraska.

The vessel, which recently docked in Tenerife, is currently undergoing a phased evacuation process for its 147 passengers based on their respective nationalities.

Upon arrival in the United States, the American passengers will be transported to the National Quarantine Unit at the University of Nebraska Medical Center.

This facility is the only federally funded unit of its kind in the country and is specifically designed to handle high-level isolation cases.

The unit features twenty single-occupancy rooms equipped with negative air pressure systems to prevent the spread of infectious pathogens.

While the World Health Organization has suggested a 42-day isolation period for those exposed, health officials have indicated that passengers may be permitted to return home earlier.

Acting CDC Director Jay Bhattacharya emphasized that current protocols are robust and designed to contain the virus effectively without the risk of a widespread pandemic.

He explicitly distinguished this event from previous global health crises, stating that the evidence does not support widespread panic.

The cruise ship, which departed from Argentina in early April, has faced a tragic situation with multiple fatalities and several serious illnesses reported among passengers.

Hantavirus is known for its high fatality rate, making the swift implementation of these medical protocols essential for the safety of the returning travelers.

The CDC is also deploying a specialized team to Offutt Air Force Base to assist with public health assessments.
