A tutor used library study sessions to abuse a seven-year-old girl.
An 18-year-old man faces three counts of sexual abuse after police say he targeted a child at the Port Washington Public Library.
Parents trust tutors to help their children learn and grow in safe, public spaces. It is a deep betrayal when that trust is used to hide harm in plain sight.
Taylor Lindberg, 18, was arrested by Nassau County police this week. He is charged with three counts of first-degree sexual abuse and endangering the welfare of a child.
Police say the abuse happened during tutoring sessions at the Port Washington Public Library in May. The victim was only seven years old.
Court records show the abuse happened on May 11. A week later, police say Lindberg told the girl he had a secret and took her to the library basement. He allegedly abused her there and used his phone to take photos.
What the evidence shows
- The suspect is 18 years old.
- The victim is seven years old.
- The incidents took place at the Port Washington Public Library.
- Charges include three counts of first-degree sexual abuse.
- Bail was set at $50,000 cash or $100,000 bond.
The bigger question
How do we keep our kids safe in public places that are supposed to be secure? Libraries are community hubs, but they are also open to anyone.
We have to ask if we are doing enough to vet the people who work with our kids. Does a public space provide enough oversight for one-on-one tutoring sessions?
The other side
Lindberg has been released after posting bail. His legal team has not yet provided a public statement regarding the specific claims made by the police. The strength of the case will depend on the digital evidence and the testimony provided to investigators.
What happens now
Police are asking anyone else who may have been a victim to come forward. You can call the Special Victims Squad at 516-573-4022 or Crime Stoppers at 1-800-244-TIPS.
This case will likely lead to tighter rules for private tutors working in public buildings. Parents may also start asking for more background checks before hiring help for their children.
What we still don't know
- Were there other children who worked with this tutor?
- Did the library have any security cameras in the basement area?
- How did the suspect find this specific family to tutor?
