A man broke into an Arizona morgue and violated the bodies of the dead.
Prosecutors say the suspect used a crowbar to enter the facility and targeted 11 different body bags.
It is hard to imagine a more chilling violation of the final peace we expect for our loved ones. A place meant to hold the dead with dignity became the site of a horrific crime.
What happened
Fenris Lu, 31, allegedly broke into the Maricopa County Medical Examiner’s Office using a crowbar. Law enforcement sources say security cameras caught him opening 11 body bags inside the facility.
Police arrived after a 911 call reported a burglary in progress. They found Lu at the scene and took him into custody without a fight.
Prosecutors say he had sexual contact with four of the bodies found in the morgue. He is now facing multiple charges, including burglary and sexual conduct with a dead person.
What the money/evidence shows
- 11 body bags were opened by the suspect.
- 4 corpses were allegedly violated.
- $500,000 bond set by the judge.
- 1 suspect, Fenris Lu, is in custody.
- 1 crowbar was used to gain entry.
The bigger question
How does a person gain access to a secure government building that holds the deceased? We trust these facilities to be locked down and protected at all times.
This case forces us to ask if our local morgues have enough security. If a single person can walk in with a tool and stay long enough to disturb 11 bodies, the system has failed the families who rely on them.
The other side
Lu did not appear in court for his initial hearing due to what officials described as combative behavior. Because the case is still in the early stages and court documents are sealed, there is no public statement from a defense attorney yet.
What happens now
Prosecutors are working to notify the families of the people whose bodies were targeted. This is a painful process that will likely take time.
Officials are also checking if this incident affects other criminal cases. If the bodies were part of ongoing investigations, this crime could complicate legal proceedings for other families.
What we still don't know
- How did the suspect bypass security measures to enter the building?
- Was the suspect acting alone or did he have help?
- What was the motive behind this specific act?
SOURCE NOTE
: All charges are allegations - Fenris Lu is presumed innocent until proven guilty.*
