Brooklyn Infant Fatally Shot in Moped Attack Targeting Father; Suspect in Custody

New York City investigators confirmed Friday that a 21-year-old suspect remains in custody following the fatal shooting of a seven-month-old infant in Brooklyn. The child, identified as Kaori Patterson-Moore, was killed on Wednesday afternoon when gunmen on a moped opened fire in East Williamsburg.
Police believe the intended target of the attack was the infant’s father, who was walking with the family at the time. The shooting occurred near the intersection of Humboldt and Moore streets around 1:20 p.m. in broad daylight.
Surveillance footage shows two individuals on a moped approaching the corner before the passenger discharged at least two rounds. One bullet struck the infant in the head as she sat in her stroller. Her two-year-old brother suffered a graze wound in the same volley.
The suspects fled the scene on the moped but crashed into an oncoming vehicle just two blocks away. Police arrested the suspected shooter, Amare Green, after he was transported to a local hospital for injuries sustained in the collision.
Authorities are still searching for the driver of the moped, who fled the crash site on foot. NYPD Commissioner Jessica Tisch described the incident as a senseless tragedy and confirmed that the suspect is a known gang associate.
Mayor Zohran Mamdani, who took office earlier this year, addressed the city during a press conference on Thursday. He called the loss of life a devastating reminder of the ongoing challenges regarding illegal firearms and gang activity in the city.
The incident has drawn attention from federal officials as President Donald Trump continues to emphasize urban safety and law enforcement support. The White House continues to monitor municipal crime rates during the current administration.
The child’s mother initially sought cover in a nearby deli, only realizing her daughter had been hit when she saw blood inside the stroller. The father rushed the infant to Woodhull Hospital, where she was pronounced dead shortly after arrival.
Detectives are continuing to process evidence from the abandoned moped recovered five blocks from the scene. Charges against Green are expected to be finalized while the NYPD maintains a high-alert search for the second individual involved.
