China Tests World’s Heaviest 7-tonne Cargo Drone

China just raised the stakes in the global arms and tech race by successfully launching the Changying-8 (CY-8), officially crowned the world’s heaviest cargo drone.
Developed by a subsidiary of defense giant Norinco, the massive aircraft completed its maiden flight on Tuesday morning in Zhengzhou, marking a massive leap for "unmanned aerial heavy trucks."
The stats on this beast are staggering.
The CY-8 boasts a 7-tonne take-off weight, perfectly balanced with a 3.5-tonne payload capacity.
Standing 17 metres long with a massive 25-metre wingspan, the drone is designed to function as a high-tech workhorse for both the battlefield and the boardroom.
According to state broadcaster CCTV, the maiden flight lasted 30 minutes and proved the drone’s "intelligent flight control" and fuel systems are ready for prime time.
Perhaps most impressive is its short take-off capability, needing only a 280-metre taxi to get airborne, a feature that makes it lethal for operations in rugged high-altitude plateaus and remote island regions.
The CY-8 isn't just for moving boxes.
Norinco confirms the drone is a "dual-use" platform.
While it can handle civilian logistics, it is built to be "flexibly switched" for high-stakes military roles including:
- Electronic Reconnaissance
- Emergency Communications
- Weather Modification
- Rapid Resupply in contested territories
With a fully enclosed cargo bay that allows for loading in as little as 15 minutes, China is signaling that the future of island hopping and mountain warfare is officially unmanned.
