The former mayor of Arcadia, Eileen Wang, has officially resigned from her position following a significant federal plea deal. Wang admitted to acting as an illegal foreign agent for the People's Republic of China during her time in office.

Court documents reveal that Wang collaborated with her then-fiancé, Yaoning Sun, to operate a website known as the U.S. News Center. The platform was presented as a legitimate news source for Chinese Americans but functioned primarily as a vehicle for state-sponsored propaganda.

Between 2020 and 2022, the pair reportedly executed specific directives from Chinese officials to influence public opinion. This included publishing content that denied reports of human rights abuses in the Xinjiang region.

Prosecutors noted that Wang frequently reported back to her handlers, providing data on reader engagement and viewership metrics. In one instance, she was commended by a handler for the rapid dissemination of a specific essay, to which she replied with gratitude.

The investigation into Wang's activities highlights ongoing concerns regarding foreign influence in local American politics. Federal prosecutors emphasized that the goal of these operations was to elevate Wang into higher political office to further Beijing's strategic interests in California.

Yaoning Sun, who served as the campaign manager for Wang's successful 2022 City Council run, was previously charged with conspiracy and acting as an illegal foreign agent. Wang confirmed that her personal relationship with Sun concluded in 2024.

During her arraignment in downtown Los Angeles, Wang entered a formal guilty plea to the federal charges. She now faces a potential maximum sentence of ten years in federal prison.

Top federal prosecutors have described this case as a stark reminder of the persistent efforts by foreign entities to exert influence within the United States. The resignation marks a dramatic end to Wang's political career in the Los Angeles County city.

The case remains a focal point for national security officials monitoring foreign interference. Authorities continue to investigate the extent of the network involved in these propaganda efforts.
