A high school counselor and basketball coach has been arrested in North Carolina after investigators allege she had sexual contact with a student on school grounds, a case that has quickly drawn attention across the local community and beyond.

Amber Elizabeth Walker, 39, who worked as both a school counselor and girls’ basketball coach at Asheboro High School, was taken into custody on Friday following an investigation triggered by a tip earlier in the week.

According to an arrest warrant obtained by WFMY, authorities received information alleging that Walker engaged in sexual activity with a student on school property on Wednesday. Investigators said they acted quickly after the report was made, and the warrant states they “quickly developed evidence confirming the allegation,” though specific details of that evidence have not been publicly disclosed.

Walker has been charged with two felony counts of sex act with a student. Officials have not released the age of the student involved, nor have they clarified what specific forms of evidence were used to support the charges at this stage of the investigation.

Law enforcement sources indicated the alleged conduct occurred on campus, intensifying concerns within the school district and raising questions about supervision, reporting procedures, and how the situation went undetected prior to the tip.

Following her arrest, Walker was immediately removed from her position. District officials confirmed she is no longer employed with the school system.

Asheboro City Schools released a statement acknowledging the arrest and emphasizing that the matter is now in the hands of law enforcement. The district noted that it cannot provide further details due to state and federal privacy laws but stressed that student safety remains its top priority.

“Asheboro City Schools is aware that a former employee of the district has been taken into custody in connection with alleged inappropriate activity,” the statement said. It added that the district enforces strict professional conduct standards and that violations of those expectations are not tolerated.

The statement also reaffirmed the district’s commitment to maintaining a safe learning environment, saying that the “safety and well-being of our students and staff remain our highest priority.”

The arrest has sent shockwaves through the school community, particularly given Walker’s dual role as both counselor and athletic coach—positions that placed her in direct daily contact with students in both academic and extracurricular settings. Just months before her arrest, school materials had reportedly encouraged college-bound students to reach out to her for guidance on scholarships and post-secondary opportunities, underscoring the level of trust she was expected to hold within the system.

Now, that trust is at the center of public concern.

While the criminal case is still in its early stages, the allegations have already raised broader questions about oversight and safeguarding measures in schools, especially in cases involving staff members who hold multiple roles of authority over students.

Authorities have not confirmed whether additional charges may be filed or whether more individuals could become involved as the investigation continues. The Asheboro Police Department has not yet released further information beyond the initial arrest warrant details.

For now, Walker remains at the center of a developing criminal case that has left parents, students, and educators in the area searching for answers. As the legal process moves forward, officials say the focus will remain on determining exactly what happened and ensuring accountability through the justice system.

The case is expected to continue drawing attention as more details emerge, particularly regarding the timeline of events and how the allegations first came to light within the school environment.
