ICE Agents Shoot Suspect During California Traffic Stop After Alleged Vehicle Attack

A shooting involving U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement agents in Central California has left one person hospitalized after officials say a suspect allegedly tried to run over officers during a targeted traffic stop.
The incident happened near Interstate 5 in Patterson, about 90 miles south of Sacramento, according to statements from the Department of Homeland Security.
Officials identified the suspect as Carlos Ivan Mendoza Hernandez, described as an undocumented immigrant allegedly connected to the 18th Street Gang, also known as Barrio 18.
Authorities say Hernandez was wanted in El Salvador for questioning related to a homicide investigation.
According to federal officials, ICE agents opened fire after the suspect allegedly used his vehicle in what they described as an attempt to strike an officer.
Officials said agents fired what they called defensive shots in line with their training to protect themselves and the public.
The suspect was transported to a hospital following the shooting. His condition has not been fully detailed.
The Federal Bureau of Investigation and the Stanislaus County Sheriff's Office are assisting with the investigation.
Authorities said no local police officers were directly involved in the shooting itself.
The office of Gavin Newsom stated that state officials expect coordination between federal and local agencies as the investigation continues.
Federal officials say vehicle related confrontations have become an increasing concern during immigration enforcement operations.
The Department of Homeland Security has claimed more than 180 incidents involving vehicles targeting agents since the start of recent immigration crackdowns, though some past incident details have later been disputed or revised.
The 18th Street Gang has been identified by federal authorities as a major transnational criminal organization with tens of thousands of members across the United States.
The U.S. government has also designated the group as a foreign terrorist organization.
Authorities say roads near the scene remained closed during the investigation as agents processed evidence.
The case remains under investigation and additional details may emerge as officials review body camera footage and witness accounts.
