San Francisco Superior Court Judge Linda Colfax sentenced Antoine Watson on Friday for the 2021 death of 84-year-old Vicha Ratanapakdee.
The sentencing concludes a legal process that began following a fatal sidewalk encounter that became a national symbol of violence against Asian Americans.
Watson received a three-year prison sentence for assault with force likely to produce great bodily harm. He also received a five-year probation enhancement.
Because Watson has already served 1,882 days in custody totaling over five years, Judge Colfax ruled that he has completed his term of incarceration.
He was ordered to be released to his mother’s home in Hayward.
The court chose the assault charge as the primary sentencing factor over the involuntary manslaughter conviction.
Judge Colfax cited Watson’s traumatic childhood, documented PTSD, and expressions of remorse as mitigating factors in her decision.
"Today’s sentence is deeply disappointing," said Monthanus Ratanapakdee, the victim’s daughter.
She argued that the consequences do not match the harm caused to her father or the message sent regarding public safety for seniors.
During the proceedings, Watson expressed shame for his actions, stating he thinks about the hurt he caused every day.
His defense attorney, Anita Nabha, maintained that the sentence complies with the law and focuses on rehabilitation rather than vengeance.
The jury had previously found Watson guilty of involuntary manslaughter in January, a verdict that the Ratanapakdee family had contested in favor of a murder conviction.
The 2021 video of the incident showed Watson running toward Ratanapakdee and pushing him to the ground.
Under the terms of his probation, Watson must stay away from the victim’s family and pay restitution.
Judge Colfax will personally monitor his progress during his five-year probation term.
The case has drawn international attention to the safety of Asian American seniors in urban centers.
While the defense emphasized Watson’s mental health struggles and traumatic background, the victim's family continues to call for stricter accountability in unprovoked attacks against the elderly.
