The Los Angeles Unified School District is currently the subject of a federal civil rights investigation. The U.S. Department of Education launched the inquiry following allegations that the district reassigned teachers accused of sexual misconduct rather than removing them from positions involving student interaction.

Federal officials from the Office of Civil Rights expressed significant concern regarding district policies. They suggest these internal rules may automatically reassign educators accused of serious offenses, including sexual harassment and inappropriate relationships with students, to different school sites.

Assistant Secretary for Civil Rights Kimberly Richey stated that schools are required to address misconduct claims in a timely manner under Title IX. She argued that the district appears to prioritize the continued employment of accused staff over the fundamental safety of its student population.

The Department of Education specifically highlighted concerns that the district might be ignoring procedural requirements designed to protect children. Federal authorities emphasized that such actions could lead to life-changing harm for students if teachers remain in contact with minors during ongoing investigations.

In response to these serious allegations, the Los Angeles Unified School District has issued a formal denial. The district maintains that the claim regarding the reassignment of teachers to other schools is factually incorrect and misleading.

According to the district, the term reassignment typically refers to an employee being directed to remain at home away from school campuses while an investigation is conducted. They asserted that all decisions are guided primarily by the safety of students and staff members.

The district further stated that it takes all reports of misconduct with the utmost seriousness. They emphasized that they follow established Title IX procedures to ensure a fair and impartial process for all parties involved in such sensitive matters.

The federal investigation also references a 2024 settlement agreement between the district and the United Teachers Los Angeles union. This agreement outlines specific conditions for reassignment, though it remains unclear if those roles involve direct student contact. The district continues to review its internal reporting systems to better prevent future misconduct and support those who come forward with concerns.
