Man Arrested After Allegedly Killing Girlfriend’s Pet Rabbit in Violent Outburst

A disturbing animal cruelty case is drawing outrage after a North Hollywood man was arrested for allegedly killing his girlfriend’s pet rabbit during what prosecutors describe as a violent domestic incident.
Authorities say Nikolas Hart, 25, faces both felony and misdemeanor charges following the death of a two-month-old rabbit named Momo.
According to the Los Angeles County District Attorney's Office, the incident allegedly happened on February 11 around 9 p.m. while Hart was living with his girlfriend in an apartment in North Hollywood.
Prosecutors claim Hart stomped the small animal during an argument.
He is also accused of placing the rabbit in a trash bag and throwing it from a second-story window afterward.
The rabbit reportedly died from blunt force trauma to the chest, abdomen, and face, according to investigators.
The charges against Hart include:
- One felony count of animal cruelty
- Misdemeanor domestic violence charges
- Attempting to dissuade a witness
- Violating a protective court order multiple times
Officials also say the court issued a new order banning Hart from owning or caring for animals if he is released.
Nathan Hochman, the Los Angeles County District Attorney, said the case reflects a pattern of alleged violence.
Prosecutors claim Hart had previously assaulted his girlfriend before the animal killing incident. Officials say they intend to pursue the maximum penalties if he is convicted.
Hart has pleaded not guilty to all charges.
Court records show bail has been set at $150,000, and a preliminary hearing is scheduled for April 16, 2026.
If convicted on all counts, Hart could face up to eight years in California state prison.
Animal welfare advocates often note that violence toward pets is sometimes considered a warning sign of broader abuse patterns, which is why cases like this often trigger both criminal prosecution and protective orders.
The case now moves into the court process as prosecutors prepare evidence and the defense prepares its response.
