One of the world’s most iconic landmarks became the scene of a terrifying security breach tonight.

At approximately 9:00 p.m. on Friday, April 3, 2026, a man allegedly set fire to the middle of Tokyo’s Shibuya Scramble Crossing, a frantic intersection that sees up to 2,500 pedestrians every two minutes.

Viral footage circulating on X (formerly Twitter) shows a sudden, intense blaze erupting directly on the asphalt as crowds of locals and tourists scrambled for safety.

According to reports from TBS and TV Asahi, a suspect, believed to be in his 40s or 50s, was captured on surveillance cameras pouring a flammable liquid, suspected to be kerosene, from a bottle onto the roadway before igniting it and walking away.

Remarkably, despite the massive crowds typical of a Friday night in Shibuya, authorities confirm there were no injuries.

Fire crews were able to extinguish the flames within 15 minutes, preventing the fire from spreading to nearby commercial buildings or the dense crowd.

The suspect reportedly turned himself in at the Shibuya Police Station shortly after the incident, admitting to the act.

He is currently being questioned on suspicion of obstructing traffic, though investigators are weighing more serious arson-related charges as they work to determine a motive for the "Shibuya Incident."
