The U.S. military has confirmed the recovery of an American soldier who vanished during a training exercise off the coast of Morocco, bringing a tragic turn to an intense international search effort.

According to the United States Army, the body of Lamont Key Jr. was recovered after he disappeared in waters near the Cap Draa Training Area.

Key was one of two U.S. service members reported missing just over a week ago while participating in an annual military exercise along Morocco’s southern coast.

Massive multinational search effort

The search operation quickly expanded into a major joint mission involving both American and Moroccan personnel.

Army officials say more than 1,000 military and civilian responders from the U.S. and Morocco have taken part in the ongoing recovery effort, combing coastal waters and surrounding areas for signs of the missing troops.

While Key’s body has now been recovered, officials confirmed that the search for the second missing service member is still active.

Authorities have not publicly identified the second soldier.

Questions remain unanswered

Military officials have not yet disclosed the exact circumstances surrounding the disappearance. It remains unclear whether rough water conditions, equipment failure, or another factor contributed to the incident.

The training mission was part of ongoing U.S.-Morocco military cooperation exercises, which regularly involve joint operations and tactical drills in the region.

A somber moment for the military community

The announcement has sparked an outpouring of condolences online, especially among veterans and military families following the case.

For many, the recovery of Key’s body brings partial closure, but the mission remains deeply emotional as search teams continue working to locate the second missing serviceman.

The Army says updates will be provided as the operation continues.
