New Orleans sheriff indicted on charges of failing to prevent jailbreak and escape of 10 inmates

Orleans Parish Sheriff Susan Hutson has been indicted on 30 felony charges following a special grand jury investigation into a major jailbreak that occurred last May.

The incident at the Orleans Justice Center saw ten inmates escape, sparking widespread concerns regarding facility security and administrative oversight.

Louisiana Attorney General Liz Murrill announced the indictment, emphasizing that the sheriff's failure to adhere to basic legal requirements directly facilitated the breach.

While the sheriff did not personally assist the inmates, the state alleges that her negligence created an environment where such an escape became possible.

The charges against Hutson include malfeasance in public office, obstruction of justice, and conspiracy.

Her chief financial officer, Bianka Brown, faces 20 similar counts, with both officials ordered to surrender their passports as legal proceedings move forward.

The May escape involved inmates exploiting defective cell locks and a hole in a wall, which they accessed by moving a toilet.

Security footage captured the group fleeing the facility, leaving behind graffiti that mocked the jail's security measures. All ten individuals were eventually recaptured by October.

A former maintenance worker, Sterling Williams, remains in custody for his alleged role in assisting the escape by disabling water pipes.

Legal representatives for Williams have argued that systemic failures within the jail were well-known long before the incident occurred.

Sheriff Hutson, who is nearing the end of her term after losing a re-election bid, previously described the escape as an unacceptable situation.

Despite her claims that the office responded with professionalism, the grand jury's findings suggest a significant breakdown in leadership and safety protocols.
