Man Arrested After Molotov Cocktail Attack on Sam Altman’s Home and OpenAI Headquarters

San Francisco law enforcement officials have arrested a 20-year-old man following a series of incidents targeting OpenAI CEO Sam Altman’s private residence and the company’s corporate headquarters. The events, which occurred in the early hours of the morning, resulted in minimal property damage and no reported injuries.

According to reports confirmed by the San Francisco Police Department and internal OpenAI communications, the suspect approached Altman’s home in the Russian Hill neighborhood around 3:45 a.m. PT. The individual allegedly threw a Molotov cocktail toward the property. The incendiary device landed near an exterior gate, sparking a small fire. Security measures and rapid response ensured the fire was quickly extinguished, causing only minor damage to the exterior. Sam Altman was not reported to be at the residence during the incident.

Shortly after the attack on the residence, the same individual traveled to OpenAI’s headquarters located in the Mission Bay district. Upon arrival at the facility on 3rd Street, the suspect reportedly made verbal threats regarding his intent to burn down the building. San Francisco police, who had been alerted to the earlier incident, located the suspect at the scene and took him into custody without further incident.

OpenAI leadership addressed the situation in a memo to employees, expressing gratitude for the swift action taken by local law enforcement. "Thankfully, no one was hurt," the company stated, noting that they are fully cooperating with the ongoing investigation.

While the suspect remains in custody with charges pending, a specific motive for the attacks has not yet been established. Law enforcement officials have not released the identity of the individual, and there is currently no evidence linking the act to specific ideologies or anti-AI activism. This event marks the first reported instance of a targeted physical attack against the leadership or physical infrastructure of OpenAI. As the investigation continues, further details regarding the suspect’s background and potential motives are expected to emerge from court filings and police updates.
