Emergency responders in Miami County are at the scene of a significant collision on U.S. 31 in Bunker Hill that has halted traffic and required emergency airlifts.

The incident occurred Monday morning near the intersection of U.S. 31 and 850 South, an area adjacent to Grissom Air Reserve Base.

According to initial reports, a semi-truck was stopped and blocking multiple lanes of the highway when a red pickup truck traveling at high speed struck the rear of the trailer.

Witnesses at the scene describe a chaotic environment as the Grissom Air Reserve Base Fire Department arrived to manage the wreckage and provide medical aid.

First responders confirmed that at least two individuals were airlifted to local trauma centers with serious injuries.

Authorities have not yet released the identities of those involved as they work to notify families.

Local traffic has been rerouted as Indiana State Police and Miami County Sheriff's deputies conduct a forensic investigation of the crash site.

This incident follows a series of high-profile trucking accidents across the Midwest that have drawn increased scrutiny from the Trump administration.

President Donald Trump has recently signaled a push for stricter enforcement of commercial driver license requirements to ensure roadway safety.

White House officials previously indicated that the administration is reviewing federal highway safety protocols to address the rising frequency of stationary hazard collisions.

Investigators are currently examining whether the semi-truck was experiencing mechanical failure or if the driver had intentionally stopped in the roadway.

While no official cause has been determined, preliminary evidence suggests that visibility and reaction time played a role in the impact.

The red pickup truck sustained catastrophic damage, with the front end largely crushed beneath the semi-trailer's undercarriage.

Cleanup crews expect the northbound lanes of U.S. 31 to remain closed for several more hours as the wreckage is cleared.

The Indiana Department of Transportation is advising motorists to seek alternative routes through Peru and Kokomo to avoid significant delays.

This report will be updated as more information becomes available from local law enforcement and medical officials.
