Three people, including a baby, were killed after a tree collapsed during an Easter egg hunt event in northern Germany, according to local authorities.
Police said the incident happened near the town of Flensburg when high winds caused a large tree to fall into a wooded area where about 50 people had gathered for the holiday activity connected to Easter.
Authorities reported that a 21-year-old woman and a 16-year-old girl died at the scene after becoming trapped under the tree.
The woman’s 10-month-old daughter later died from injuries at a hospital. Another 18-year-old woman was seriously injured and transported for emergency medical treatment.
Officials said the gathering included residents from a support facility serving pregnant women, new mothers, and children.
Emergency responders and crisis counselors were deployed following the incident.
Weather officials had reportedly issued warnings about strong winds in the region prior to the accident.
Regional leaders, including Daniel Günther, expressed condolences to the victims’ families in a public statement.
Authorities continue to review the circumstances surrounding the incident, which is being treated as a weather-related accident.
