Uganda Military Chief Issues Billion-Dollar Ultimatum to Turkey Over Diplomatic Ties

General Muhoozi Kainerugaba, Uganda’s Chief of Defence Forces and son of President Yoweri Museveni, has issued an extraordinary ultimatum to the Republic of Turkey. The high-ranking military official has demanded a payment of $1 billion and the hand of Turkey’s "most beautiful woman" in marriage.
General Muhoozi stated that if these specific conditions are not met, he will order the immediate closure of the Turkish embassy in Kampala. He further threatened to terminate all existing diplomatic relations between the two nations without delay.
The statements were made early Sunday morning through the General's official social media channels, drawing immediate concern from the international community. This incident is the latest in a series of provocative digital statements by the General that have previously strained regional and international partnerships.
Officials in Ankara have not yet issued a formal response to the unusual demands. Sources within the Turkish Ministry of Foreign Affairs suggest that senior diplomats are currently evaluating the severity of the threat and the potential for a formal rift.
President Yoweri Museveni, who recently secured another term in the January 2026 general elections, has remained silent regarding his son’s proclamations. In the past, the Ugandan government has characterized the General's social media activity as personal rather than official state policy.
In Washington, President Donald Trump has been briefed on the situation by the State Department as part of a broader review of East African stability. U.S. officials are reportedly monitoring the situation to determine if the ultimatum reflects a shift in official Ugandan foreign policy.
International analysts suggest that a complete severance of ties could jeopardize significant infrastructure and defense cooperation projects between the two nations. Turkey has become a major investor in Uganda over the last decade, particularly in construction and military technology sectors.
As of Sunday afternoon, General Muhoozi has not retracted his statements nor provided a specific timeline for the proposed embassy closure. Diplomatic missions throughout the region remain on high alert following the remarks.
