Former big leaguer Royce Clayton was called to testify this week in the high-stakes $100 million civil trial against convicted killer Rebecca Grossman.
As the proceedings enter their sixth day on Friday, May 1, 2026, the retired shortstop faced questioning about the hours leading up to the 2020 tragedy that claimed the lives of Mark and Jacob Iskander.
Clayton, a longtime friend of co-defendant and former MLB pitcher Scott Erickson, testified regarding their time together at Julio’s Agave Grill and Stonehaus in Westlake Village just before the fatal crash.
His testimony is central to the plaintiffs' argument that Grossman and Erickson were impaired and racing their Mercedes SUVs.
Clayton confirmed that he, Erickson, and Grossman had been socializing and consuming margaritas before the couple allegedly engaged in the "street race" that ended in the crosswalk at Triunfo Canyon Road.
While Grossman is already serving 15 years to life for second-degree murder, this civil trial seeks to hold Erickson and Grossman’s husband, Peter, financially liable for the wrongful deaths.
Clayton’s appearance follows an emotional week of testimony, including a video deposition from Grossman’s daughter, Alexis, who claimed she saw Erickson "hiding in the bushes" at the scene of the crash.
