A deeply disturbing family tragedy in Southern California has reached a legal conclusion after a Ventura County man was sentenced to prison for killing his younger brother, a 15-year-old with cerebral palsy, in a violent and shocking attack.
Zuberi Sharp, 26, was sentenced to 15 years to life in prison for the murder of his brother, Zayde Sharp, according to the Ventura County District Attorney’s Office.
The killing happened on the night of December 5, 2024, at a home in Newbury Park. Authorities say Zuberi attacked Zayde inside a backyard shed using a pickaxe, striking him in the head. The teen was rushed to a hospital but was later pronounced dead.
Family members described Zayde as a loving and joyful child who lived with cerebral palsy, a condition that required him to use a wheelchair. Despite that, they said he embraced life fully and brought constant positivity to those around him.
Chaos after the attack
The violence did not end at the home.
Authorities say Zuberi fled the scene and was later found at Newbury Park High School, where he was reportedly running naked across the football field while still holding the weapon. The situation triggered an immediate lockdown as student-athletes were present on campus at the time.
He was eventually taken into custody without further incident.
Motive still unclear
Investigators have not released an official motive. However, family members previously suggested that Zuberi may have been experiencing a manic episode during the attack.
Court records show he was charged days later with murder and additional enhancements, including use of a deadly weapon and targeting a vulnerable victim. On April 1, 2026, he pleaded guilty to second-degree murder, leading to his sentencing on May 5, 2026.
A grieving family
At memorial events, Zayde’s mother described her son as someone who “exuded love,” highlighting the emotional toll the loss continues to take on the family.
While the sentence brings legal closure, it does little to ease the lasting pain of a case that combined family, vulnerability, and extreme violence in one devastating moment.
