A long-awaited natural space in the Ventura hillsides is expected to open to the public in early 2026. The Ventura Hills Nature Preserve, a 1,645-acre area formerly known as Mariano Rancho, promises sweeping views, rugged trails, and permanent protection from development.

🌿 What We Know

The Ventura Land Trust acquired the property several years ago after plans to build housing there were halted. The land was purchased with the goal of preserving it for public use and conservation. The preserve sits above Ventura off Hall Canyon Road and features steep terrain and panoramic vistas of the coastline, mountains, and surrounding communities.

🏞️ Opening Plans

Preparation for the public opening has been underway for months. The Land Trust has been working on trail systems, signage, and safety infrastructure to make the space accessible to hikers, nature lovers, and educational groups. A formal announcement of an exact opening date is expected soon.

🌍 Why It Matters

This preserve represents one of the largest open space acquisitions in recent Ventura County history. It adds to the region's outdoor recreation options and aligns with broader environmental efforts to protect habitats and provide urban communities with access to nature.

💬 What They’re Saying

Local officials and conservation advocates see the preserve as a legacy investment in Ventura’s quality of life. With increasing development pressure and limited access to undeveloped land, the preserve’s opening is being celebrated as a major win for both residents and the environment.

📅 What’s Next

Once open, the preserve will offer trails for hiking and wildlife observation, along with volunteer and educational opportunities. Ongoing stewardship by the Ventura Land Trust will ensure the site remains protected for future generations.
