WHO Investigates Potential Human-to-Human Hantavirus Transmission on Cruise Ship

The World Health Organization is currently monitoring a concerning cluster of hantavirus cases identified aboard the expedition cruise ship MV Hondius. The vessel, which departed from Argentina, is currently anchored off the coast of Cape Verde following reports of seven suspected cases.

Among those affected, three individuals have tragically passed away, while two cases have been confirmed through laboratory testing. Patients have presented with symptoms ranging from initial fever to rapid progression into severe respiratory distress.

Hantaviruses are typically transmitted to humans through contact with aerosolized rodent excreta. However, specific strains found in southern South America, known as the Andes virus, have previously demonstrated a rare capacity for limited human-to-human transmission.

Health officials are investigating whether the close quarters of the ship facilitated this unusual spread. Maria Van Kerkhove of the WHO noted that the transmission pattern appears to align with close, prolonged contact between cabin mates.
