A woman was caught on camera stealing a campaign sign for Spencer Pratt in Los Angeles.
A resident in Studio City caught two women on camera stealing a campaign sign for mayoral candidate Spencer Pratt, sparking an online hunt for the suspects.
It feels like you cannot even put a sign in your own yard anymore without someone taking it. A simple piece of plastic has become a target in a heated local race.
What happened
A man in Studio City checked his home cameras on Wednesday. He saw two young women walk up to his yard and pull his Spencer Pratt for mayor sign out of the ground.
The resident told police he did not know the women. He said they did not live on his street and he had never seen them before.
Journalist Daniel Guss shared the video online. It shows a woman in workout clothes tucking the sign under her arm and walking away with a friend. Guss is now asking people on the internet to help find out who she is.
What the money/evidence shows
- The theft took place in the Studio City neighborhood of Los Angeles.
- Surveillance video shows two young women taking the sign.
- The main suspect has a visible tattoo on her left arm.
- Spencer Pratt is currently polling at 23% in the race for mayor.
- Mayor Karen Bass leads the race with 35% support.
The bigger question
Why do people feel the need to remove signs they do not like? It is a small act, but it shows how tense our local politics have become.
We should ask if this is just a prank or a sign of deeper anger. When people stop talking and start taking things, it makes it harder for everyone to have a fair say in the election.
The other side
No one has come forward to speak for the women in the video yet. Without a statement from them, it is hard to know if they were trying to make a point or just causing trouble. The evidence of the video is clear, but the motive remains a mystery.
What happens now
Police have a report on the theft. If the women are found, they could face trouble for taking property that does not belong to them. Even if a sign is in the wrong spot, only city workers are allowed to move it.
What we still don't know
- Who are the two women seen in the video?
- Did they take other signs in the neighborhood?
- Will the police be able to track them down using the video?
