A woman stepped out of her car in Midtown and fell into an open manhole to her death

A 56-year-old woman died after falling 10 feet into an unsecured utility hole near Fifth Avenue on Monday night.

A 56-year-old woman from Briarcliff Manor parked her Mercedes SUV near Fifth Avenue and East 52nd Street around 11:20 p.m. on Monday. As she stepped out of the car, she fell into an open Con Edison manhole.

She dropped about 10 feet into the hole. First responders arrived quickly and pulled her out, but she later died at New York-Presbyterian Hospital.
