A 16-year-old has been taken into custody after a deadly shooting near the Santa Monica Pier that investigators say began with a confrontation between two groups.
The incident, which occurred early Monday morning in a parking lot adjacent to the popular tourist destination, left one man dead and prompted a homicide investigation by the Santa Monica Police Department.

According to the Santa Monica Police Department, officers responded around 12:30 a.m. on July 20 to the Lot 1 North parking lot at 1550 Pacific Coast Highway after receiving reports of a shooting.
When officers arrived, they found a man suffering from multiple gunshot wounds. Despite life-saving efforts, the victim was pronounced dead at the scene.
The Los Angeles County Medical Examiner later identified the victim as Edgar Buitmea.
Investigators said the shooting occurred after a fight broke out between two groups, which escalated into gunfire.
On July 21, Santa Monica police arrested a 16-year-old boy in connection with the homicide. Because the suspect is a juvenile, authorities have not released his identity.
