The incident happened at approximately 4:39 p.m. Monday, Aug. 31, at a retail location in the Westfield Culver City area in the 6000 block of Sepulveda Boulevard, according to the Culver City Police Department.
Officers were dispatched after receiving reports of a group of juveniles allegedly harassing patrons at the location. Moments later, police received an updated call reporting that members of the same group were assaulting a man.
When officers arrived, they quickly located an adult male victim suffering from significant injuries. Culver City Fire Department personnel responded and transported him to a local hospital, where he was listed in critical but non-life-threatening condition, according to police.
The initial reports described the incident as an assault involving a group of young people, but investigators later learned that the confrontation involved a family who had been at the retail location together.
“During the investigation, officers learned that the victim was with his girlfriend and their two young children when the incident occurred,” Culver City authorities explained.
Police said the suspects forcibly took jewelry from the female victim during the assault, causing her to suffer injuries.
The woman and the couple’s two young children were also transported to a local hospital as a precaution. Police have not indicated that either child suffered serious injuries.
The incident therefore involved multiple victims and unfolded in a busy retail environment, where investigators are now seeking witnesses who may have seen the confrontation, the suspects or their escape.
WHAT POLICE SAY
The Culver City Police Department is treating the case as an active investigation and is working to determine exactly what happened during the confrontation and identify everyone involved.
Authorities described the suspects as approximately five to six Black males believed to be between 16 and 20 years old. Police also said the group was wearing dark clothing.
Investigators described the group as “five to six Black males, believed to be between 16 and 20 years old, wearing dark clothing,” according to information released by police.
The suspects were last seen fleeing toward Slauson Avenue and Hannum Drive, police said.
Culver City police detectives are “actively investigating the incident and working to identify those responsible,” authorities said in the department's public appeal for information.
No suspects have been publicly identified or arrested in connection with the assault as of the latest reports.
The age range provided by investigators also means the group could include both juveniles and adults. Police have not released names, photographs or other identifying information for the people being sought.
Investigators have not publicly explained what initially triggered the confrontation or whether the victims and suspects had any prior relationship. Those details could become clearer as detectives review available evidence and speak with witnesses.
The investigation is also expected to determine the sequence of events leading from the reported harassment of patrons to the physical assault and alleged theft of jewelry.
THE BIGGER QUESTION
The severity of the man's injuries has added urgency to the investigation, particularly because police say the incident involved a family with two young children.
The fact that the confrontation allegedly began with reports of juveniles harassing patrons and later escalated into an assault is one of the key elements investigators will need to establish. It remains unclear how long the confrontation lasted, whether other people witnessed it and precisely how the male victim sustained his injuries.
The alleged taking of jewelry from the woman is another significant part of the investigation. Police say she was injured during the incident, but authorities have not publicly provided details about the extent of those injuries or the value of the jewelry.
At this stage, the allegations against the unidentified suspects have not been tested in court. No arrests have been announced, and investigators have not publicly assigned criminal charges to specific individuals.
A skeptical or cautious reading of the case is therefore important: the initial police account provides the framework for what investigators believe happened, but additional evidence and witness statements could clarify or change details as the investigation progresses.
Police are particularly interested in hearing from anyone who was inside the retail location or in the surrounding area around the time of the assault. Witnesses may have information about the suspects' appearance, direction of travel or actions immediately before and after the attack.
The suspects were last seen heading toward Slauson Avenue and Hannum Drive, giving detectives a specific area to investigate for additional witnesses or surveillance footage.
Anyone who witnessed the assault or has information that could help investigators identify the suspects is asked to contact CCPD Investigations Lieutenant Ryan Thompson at (310) 253-6302 or email ryan.thompson@culvercity.org.
Authorities are asking members of the public with relevant information to come forward rather than attempting to confront or approach anyone they believe may be connected to the case.
The investigation remains ongoing as detectives work to identify the individuals involved and establish the circumstances surrounding the assault and alleged robbery.
