William Bosworth was arrested in Florida after police clocked his Nissan sports car going way over the speed limit.

When we get older, we are told to slow down and stay safe. But sometimes the urge to feel young and free again can lead to dangerous choices on the road.

WHAT HAPPENED

Police in Leesburg, Florida, pulled over two fast cars late at night on June 12.

One car was a gray Nissan sports car driven by 85-year-old William Bosworth. He was calmly smoking a cigarillo when the deputy approached.

The other car was a red Corvette driven by 57-year-old Philip Signorino. Police say the two men were racing each other at speeds over 100 mph in a 45 mph zone.

WHAT THE EVIDENCE SHOWS

William Bosworth, 85, was driving a gray Nissan sports car at 110 mph.

  • Philip Signorino, 57, was driving a red Corvette at 125 mph.
  • The speed limit in the area on Highway 27 was 45 mph.
  • Both drivers face charges of racing on a highway and dangerous speeding.

THE BIGGER QUESTION

This story makes us look at how we view older drivers. We often worry about slow senior drivers, but we rarely think about them racing down the highway at midnight. What drives someone to take such a huge risk at that stage of life?

Is it about the thrill of the ride, or is it a sign of a deeper desire to hold onto youth?

THE OTHER SIDE

Bosworth told the deputy he was not racing. He said the Corvette swerved at him, so he sped up to get away and avoid a crash. He said he was just enjoying a late-night drive in his favorite car.

WHAT HAPPENS NOW

Both men are facing serious criminal charges. In Florida, racing on a highway and driving more than 50 mph over the limit can lead to losing your license, high fines, and even jail time. This serves as a warning that age does not protect anyone from the law when lives are put in danger.

WHAT WE STILL DON'T KNOW

  1. Did these two men really not know each other before that night?
  2. How long had they been driving at those extreme speeds before the police saw them?
  3. Will the state take away Bosworth's driver's license for good?
