A man trusted with top-secret files says he killed his girlfriend

Kyle Sanchez, 35, called 911 on Friday to say he stabbed his girlfriend to death in their Tampa home.

We trust some people with our lives and our country's safety. When that trust breaks at home, the shock felt by a community is deep and painful.

WHAT HAPPENED

Kyle Sanchez lived in Tampa and worked for the military. He held a top-secret security clearance. This means the government trusted him with very sensitive data.

On Friday, that life ended when he picked up the phone. He told a 911 operator, "Um, I murdered my girlfriend."

Police rushed to the house they shared. They found a woman dead from stab wounds. Sanchez was arrested right away and charged with first-degree murder.

What the evidence shows

  • 1 phone call made to 911 on Friday.
  • 1 victim found dead in a Tampa home.
  • 35 years old is the age of the suspect.
  • 1 charge of first-degree murder filed.
  • Top-secret clearance held by the suspect.

THE BIGGER QUESTION

How does someone vetted by the highest levels of government fall into such violence? We often think background checks catch everything.

But these checks cannot see into a person's heart or a private home. This case makes us wonder if the systems meant to keep our country safe are missing the warning signs of domestic pain.

THE OTHER SIDE

Sanchez has not yet entered a formal plea in court. His lawyers will likely look at his mental state or what happened in the moments before the 911 call. Right now, the recorded confession makes a simple defense very difficult.

WHAT HAPPENS NOW

Sanchez is in jail facing a first-degree murder charge. Federal officials are also looking into his case because of his military job.

For the neighbors in Tampa, a quiet street has become a crime scene. A family is now left to mourn a life cut short.

WHAT WE STILL DON'T KNOW

  1. What led to the fight that ended in a stabbing?
  2. Did his military bosses notice any changes in his behavior?
  3. Who was the victim and what was her story?
