You expect to bring home gifts from a trip, not a germ that stays in the air long after a stranger leaves the room.

WHAT HAPPENED

Health workers in Santa Clara County are on high alert. They found out a person with measles traveled through the area on June 8.

This person went to San Francisco International Airport (SFO). They also stopped at several busy places in San Jose while they were able to spread the germ.

Measles is very easy to catch. It can hang in the air for two hours after a sick person leaves. This puts many travelers at risk.

What the evidence shows

  • Date of risk: June 8, 2026.
  • Key spots: SFO Airport and San Jose public hubs.
  • Time frame: Signs of sickness can show up to 21 days later.
  • The threat: Measles is one of the most easy to catch viruses on earth.
  • The fix: Two doses of the MMR shot are 97% effective.

THE BIGGER QUESTION

We often think of measles as a thing of the past. But as travel grows and shot rates slip in some areas, these scares are becoming common again.

Should we change how we check people at the world's biggest airports? Or is the risk of a few cases just the price we pay for a world where everyone travels?

WHAT HAPPENS NOW

If you were at SFO on June 8, look for a fever, cough, or red spots. If you feel sick, call your doctor before you go to their office.

This helps keep other patients safe. Most people who had their shots will be fine, but the young and the weak are still in danger.

WHAT WE STILL DON'T KNOW

  1. Which specific airline or flight did the traveler use?
  2. Has the virus spread to anyone else in the Bay Area yet?
  3. Where did the first case of this sickness start?
