The fires identified by emergency responders as the Old Trails Fire, the Fairview Fire, and the Autumn Lane Fire rapidly expanded across more than 7,700 acres under the influence of strong wind gusts, low humidity, and severe drought conditions. Aerial footage shows residential streets reduced to rubble, with scorched vehicle frames, burned-out foundations, and charred timber lining neighborhoods where suburban developments border open brushland.
Driven by wind gusts exceeding 40 miles per hour, the flames jumped topographical barriers, including steep canyon walls and sections of the Spokane River, pushing directly into densely populated neighborhoods. Local authorities issued mandatory evacuation orders impacting an estimated 60,000 residents across Spokane County and adjacent areas, marking one of the largest evacuation operations in the city's history.
