Six years after the tragic death of Martha McKay, the details of the Snowden House case continue to serve as a stark reminder of the complexities of restorative justice.

McKay, 63, was a prominent figure in Horseshoe Lake, Arkansas, celebrated for her restoration of her family's historic estate into a luxury bed-and-breakfast.

On March 25, 2020, authorities discovered McKay's body at the top of the stairs in her home.

She had been stabbed and bludgeoned to death during what investigators initially described as a targeted attack.

The perpetrator, Travis Lewis, died shortly after the incident.

He drowned in Horseshoe Lake while attempting to evade law enforcement during a high-speed police chase following the discovery of the crime scene.

The subsequent investigation revealed a haunting historical connection.

Lewis was the same individual convicted of the 1996 murders of McKay’s mother, Sally Snowden McKay, and her cousin, Memphis musician Lee Baker.

Despite the family's violent history with Lewis, Martha McKay had reached out to him during his 28-year prison sentence.

As a practicing Buddhist, she reportedly felt a spiritual obligation to offer forgiveness and support to her mother's killer.

McKay maintained a consistent correspondence with Lewis and eventually supported his early parole in 2018.

Her sister, Katie Hutton, noted that McKay believed Lewis’s claims of innocence regarding the original 1996 crimes despite his guilty plea.

Upon his release from prison, McKay provided Lewis with employment and a chance at reintegration at the Snowden House property.

This arrangement continued until shortly before the 2020 murder occurred at the estate.

Investigation records suggest a financial motive may have triggered the final confrontation.

McKay reportedly fired Lewis after a significant sum of cash, approximately $10,000, went missing from her residence following the sale of a chandelier.

The Crittenden County Sheriff’s Office identified Lewis as the sole perpetrator in the 2020 slaying.

For the Snowden family, the tragedy remains an incomprehensible cycle of violence spanning more than two decades.
