A social media personality who spent years building a following around art and culture has died under circumstances that investigators are still trying to understand.
Just hours before her death, she posted online that she was enjoying her weekend in Brazil.
Hilde Lynn Helphenstein, a 40-year-old California-based art influencer known online as Jerry Gogosian, was found dead in her room at the Rosewood São Paulo.
According to reports, Helphenstein had traveled to Brazil for plastic surgery and was spending several weeks recovering after the procedure.
Her surgeon reportedly became concerned when she stopped answering phone calls and went to check on her at the hotel.
Inside the room, the surgeon allegedly found an empty vodka bottle, broken glass, and unidentified pills near her body.
The surgeon also stated that Helphenstein had previously been taken to a hospital during her stay after a possible overdose.
Authorities have not announced a cause of death, and police have reportedly classified the case as suspicious while the investigation continues.
Just hours before she was found dead, Helphenstein shared a social media post saying she was having a great weekend in Brazil.
What the case shows
- Hilde Lynn Helphenstein was 40 years old
- She was widely known online as Jerry Gogosian
- She traveled to Brazil for plastic surgery
- She was found dead in a hotel room in São Paulo
- Police have described the death as suspicious
- No official cause of death has been released
The bigger question
The case highlights the risks that can arise when people travel abroad for medical procedures and recover away from family and close support systems.
It also shows how little the public often knows in the early stages of a death investigation, especially when social media posts shortly before a person's death appear inconsistent with what investigators later discover.
What happens now
Investigators are expected to review medical records, toxicology results, and evidence collected from the hotel room.
Those findings will likely play a major role in determining whether the death was accidental, self-inflicted, related to medical complications, or the result of another cause.
What we still don't know
- The official cause and manner of death
- What the unidentified pills found in the room were
- Whether investigators suspect any criminal involvement
