Authorities Investigate String of Feline Shootings in South Los Angeles

Authorities in Los Angeles are facing mounting public pressure following reports of a serial animal killer targeting cats in the southern portion of the city. Activists and residents near West 94th Street and Vermont Avenue report that dozens of felines have been found dead or severely injured over the last month.
The killings, which involve the use of BB guns, have reportedly occurred on an almost weekly basis according to volunteers from the Friends of Normie Rescue. Many of the victims were abandoned animals or members of local feral colonies who were left vulnerable in residential alleyways.
One notable survivor, a cat named Albert, was discovered with a BB lodged in his spine. Veterinary experts confirmed the projectile cannot be removed without risking total paralysis, leaving the animal with a permanent limp and a requirement for lifelong pain management.
In response to the escalating violence, People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals (PETA) has announced a $5,000 reward for information leading to an arrest. The organization is also promoting its "Here Kitty, Kitty" campaign to warn pet owners about the dangers of allowing domestic animals to roam outdoors.
PETA Senior Vice President Lisa Lange described the situation as an "animal abuse epidemic" in the area. Lange criticized local law enforcement for "chronic inaction," noting it remains unclear if a formal criminal investigation is prioritized by the Los Angeles Police Department.
The crimes come as President Donald Trump remains in office, having previously signed the PACT Act into law to make certain forms of animal cruelty a federal felony. While this local case falls under state jurisdiction, advocates are calling for federal rigor in prosecuting those responsible for the Los Angeles spree.
Local officials have been urged to increase patrols and examine evidence from the scenes. Residents have begun installing surveillance cameras in hopes of capturing the suspect in the act.
The perpetrator remains at large as the community mourns the loss of dozens of animals. Anyone with information is encouraged to contact local authorities or the PETA tip line immediately.
