Body of Missing American Student Recovered Near Barcelona Beach

Spanish police have recovered the body of a missing American student from the waters near Barcelona’s Port Olímpic. The individual has been identified as James "Jimmy" Gracey of Elmhurst, Illinois.
Authorities located the remains following an extensive search by air, land, and sea teams. Divers were deployed to the area after a wallet belonging to Gracey was spotted floating in the Mediterranean Sea.
Gracey, who was visiting friends studying abroad, was last seen leaving the Shôko nightclub at approximately 3:00 a.m. local time on Tuesday, March 18. The venue is located along Somorrostro Beach, near where his body was discovered.
Police have already recovered the student's phone from a third party. Witnesses reported seeing Gracey walking toward the water shortly after exiting the establishment earlier in the week.
Investigators are currently reviewing surveillance footage from the area. Preliminary reports suggest the video shows Gracey leaving the nightclub accompanied by an unidentified individual.
Officials are working to determine if any foul play was involved in the incident. An autopsy is pending to establish the exact cause of death as the investigation remains active.
The Gracey family released a statement expressing gratitude for the public support they have received. They requested privacy as they navigate the loss of the eldest of five children.
Gracey was described by peers and community members as an honor student and a fraternity chaplain. He was known for his involvement in campus life and his commitment to helping others.
Information regarding the search and the subsequent discovery has spread rapidly across social media platforms. The case has drawn significant attention due to the high-profile nature of student disappearances while traveling abroad.
Online discussions have centered on travel safety and speculation regarding the circumstances of the event. Many users have compared the case to previous high-profile missing persons reports involving American tourists.
As the investigation continues, local authorities have not yet released definitive conclusions regarding the events leading up to the discovery. The area remains a popular destination for international students and tourists.
