She died in a tragic bungee mistake. Then the internet trolls came for her.

After a 21-year-old student fell 130 feet to her death in Brazil, her family had to close her social accounts to stop vile sexual harassment.

Losing a child is the worst pain a parent can feel. But for one family, that pain was made worse by strangers on the internet who mocked their daughter's death.

WHAT HAPPENED

Maria Eduarda Rodrigues de Freitas, 21, went to jump off an old railway bridge in Brazil on Saturday. Three instructors picked her up and threw her off. But they forgot to attach the rope.

She fell 130 feet. She did not die right away, and a nurse tried to save her, but she passed away from her injuries. The jump site was illegal and had no license.

After she died, trolls posted cruel sexual comments on her old social media pages. Her family had to take all her accounts down to protect her memory.

What the evidence shows

  • 130 feet: The height of the fall from the bridge.
  • 3: The number of instructors arrested and charged with homicide.
  • 0: The number of licenses the jump business held.
  • 3 years: The maximum jail time trolls could face for online abuse under Brazilian law.
  • 2: The number of instructors who tried to run away into the woods before police caught them.

THE BIGGER QUESTION

Why does social media allow people to target victims of sudden deaths? Huge tech companies make billions of dollars, yet they often fail to police hate on their platforms. We must ask if these sites should do more to protect grieving families.

THE OTHER SIDE

Lawyers for the arrested instructors have not yet made public statements. Two of the men tried to run into the woods before police caught them. The video evidence of the unattached rope makes their defense very difficult.

WHAT HAPPENS NOW

Brazilian police are looking for the people who wrote the vile comments. Lawmakers want big tech companies to take more duty for online abuse. Regular people might think twice before trusting unlicensed sports groups.

WHAT WE STILL DON'T KNOW

  1. Why did the instructors fail to attach the rope when it was lying right next to them?
  2. Who were the specific internet users who wrote the comments, and will they actually go to jail?
  3. Will social media companies change their rules to block trolls faster after a tragedy?
