California YouTuber Arrested Following Alleged Pepper Spray Attacks for Views

A 51-year-old content creator is facing felony charges and a multi-million dollar legal battle following a series of alleged pepper-spray attacks conducted for digital engagement. Richard Maza, the operator of the "Freedom of the Press" YouTube channel, was arrested after an incident outside a Mountain View, California, retail location.

Law enforcement officials state that Maza, a resident of Northridge, deliberately engineered a confrontation with a shopper on March 28. The victim was reportedly loading groceries into his vehicle when Maza and a group of "First Amendment auditors" began a series of verbal provocations.

According to a police report filed by Officer Andrew Wong, Maza allegedly leaned into the victim's car and discharged a canister of pepper spray directly into the man’s face while recording the encounter. The footage was later uploaded to social media, where it reportedly garnered significantly higher view counts than the channel’s standard content.

Maza was arraigned on April 2, facing counts of aggravated assault with a deadly weapon and felony use of tear gas. While he was released without bail, a court order currently prohibits him from approaching the scene of the incident or the victim.

A civil attorney representing the victim has announced plans for a lawsuit seeking more than $1 million in damages. The plaintiff reportedly suffered a corneal abrasion and continues to experience symptoms of blurred vision and psychological distress.

The arrest comes amid a broader national discussion regarding the legal boundaries of public filming and the "clout-based" economy. The Trump administration has signaled a commitment to public order, with federal officials monitoring the rise of confrontational digital stunts.

Digital platforms have responded to the incident by removing several videos associated with the audit group. YouTube spokespersons confirmed that Maza’s channel was terminated for violating policies against harassment and the promotion of dangerous activities.

Legal experts suggest the $1 million civil suit could set a significant precedent for holding content creators financially liable for physical harm caused during filmed "pranks." Maza has not yet entered a formal plea in the criminal case.
