Cause of Death Undetermined for Missing Ojai Woman Zyanya Valora

For a year and a half the family of Zyanya Valora held onto hope that they would find their daughter alive. That hope was shattered in September when her remains were discovered in a remote area of the Ojai Valley. While the discovery provided a sad conclusion to the search for her whereabouts new reports from the Ventura County Medical Examiner’s Office have failed to explain exactly what happened to the 21 year old woman.
📍 A Remote Discovery in the Riverbed
The search for Zyanya Valora ended on September 24 when a group of conservancy workers found human skeletal remains. They were clearing invasive plants from the Ventura River bottom just south of the Baldwin Road bridge when they stumbled upon the scene. The area is extremely difficult to access and requires hiking down a steep berm and walking through dense shrubs in a dry riverbed.
The investigator on the case reported that the bones were scattered roughly 30 feet apart. Along with the remains they found her cell phone and torn clothing nearby. Because of the condition of the remains the medical examiner had to use dental records to confirm that the body belonged to Valora. The location was about two and a half miles from her home in Mira Monte.
🩺 Medical Examiner Findings Leave Questions
Despite a full autopsy and trauma evaluation at a state university the results were inconclusive. The Chief Medical Examiner for Ventura County officially ruled that both the cause and manner of death are undetermined. There were no obvious signs of lethal trauma found on the partial skeletal remains. The report did note evidence of animal scavenger activity which is common when remains are left in a remote outdoor area for a long period of time.
This lack of answers is a heavy blow for Valora’s parents who have spent eighteen months searching for the truth. Zyanya was autistic and had a tendency to wander off in the past but her parents always feared that someone might have taken her. They noted that a screen had been removed from her bedroom window on the night she disappeared in June of 2024. While the medical examiner found no proof of foul play they also found nothing to rule it out entirely.
💐 Remembering Z at a Celebration of Life
Rather than celebrating her 23rd birthday this December her loved ones gathered at Calvary Community Church in Westlake Village to honor her memory. Those who knew her best called her "Z" and described her as a bright and sensitive soul who loved nature and Taylor Swift. Teachers from her high school spoke about her gift for writing and her quiet intelligence.
The family remains grateful to the community for the incredible support and compassion shown during the long search. While the official reports may not provide the closure they were looking for the parents say they believe Zyanya is now at peace. The investigation into her disappearance is technically closed unless new evidence surfaces but the memory of her unique way of seeing the world will stay with the Ojai community for a long time.
