TIPTON, Calif. — The California Highway Patrol is mourning the loss of one of its own after a veteran motorcycle officer was killed in an on-duty traffic crash along Highway 99 in Tulare County, state law enforcement officials announced.

The CHP Moorpark Office joined statewide divisions in honoring Officer Brian Liles, 44, following the tragic incident on Monday evening.
Officer Liles served as a motor officer assigned to the CHP Visalia Area office.
The fatal collision occurred at approximately 5:11 p.m. on Monday, September 28, 2026, on State Route 99, just north of State Route 190 in the Tipton area.
Fatal Highway 99 Crash and Lifesaving Efforts
According to an official statement issued by the California Highway Patrol, Officer Liles was on active motorcycle patrol when he was involved in a traffic collision along the highway corridor.
First responders and emergency medical personnel rushed to the scene to render immediate life-saving aid. However, despite emergency intervention, Officer Liles succumbed to his injuries at the crash site.
Details regarding the secondary vehicles or specific circumstances surrounding the collision remain under investigation by CHP Multidisciplinary Accident Investigation Teams (MAIT).
Sixteen Years of Dedicated Public Service
Officer Liles dedicated more than 16 years of his life to protecting California roadways and communities.
After graduating from the California Highway Patrol Academy in West Sacramento in 2010, he began his career serving the San Jose Area. Throughout his tenure, he also served drivers in the Hayward and Fresno Areas before transferring to the Visalia Area office in 2019.
Officer Liles is survived by his wife, his two children, his parents, and two sisters.
"It is with profound sadness that the California Highway Patrol announces the line-of-duty death of Officer Brian Liles of the Visalia Area," the California Highway Patrol shared in an official advisory.
"The CHP extends its deepest condolences to Officer Liles' family, friends, loved ones, and all who served alongside him. His dedication to public service and commitment to protecting the people of California will not be forgotten," CHP representatives added.
