A top student went off script at graduation. Her principal pulled her off the stage.

Clayton High School's top student had her microphone cut after she began criticizing Israel and US immigration policies during her speech.

Graduation is a day for families to celebrate years of hard work. But at one North Carolina school, a student's final words turned a celebration into a sudden clash.

WHAT HAPPENED

Leen Hijaz was the top student at Clayton High School. She stood up to give her speech on a Thursday.

Instead of reading her approved speech, she started talking about global issues. She spoke about people suffering in Palestine and other countries. She also spoke about US immigration agents tearing families apart.

Principal Melissa Moore quickly walked onto the stage. She grabbed Hijaz by the arm and pulled her away from the microphone.

WHAT THE EVIDENCE SHOWS

1 student pulled from the microphone.

  • 5 countries or regions named in the speech.
  • 1 school district statement confirming the student went off-script.
  • 1 diploma held briefly but awarded to the student by June 2, 2026.
  • 1 viral video posted by the student about the incident.

THE BIGGER QUESTION

Where is the line between school rules and free speech? High school graduations are paid for by taxpayers, but they are also run by the school.

When we silence young people on big stages, what do they learn? Do they learn to respect order, or do they learn that their voices do not matter?

THE OTHER SIDE

School leaders say they had to step in. They said they did this to keep the event focused on graduation, not to stop the student from speaking.

This argument is strong because schools have a right to run their own events, but it angered many who felt the action was too harsh.

WHAT HAPPENS NOW

The school has now given Hijaz her diploma. But the debate in the town is far from over.

Other schools in the area may now set stricter rules for student speakers.

WHAT WE STILL DON'T KNOW

Did the school warn students ahead of time about what would happen if they changed their speeches?

  • Will the school change how it picks future graduation speakers?
  • How did the other students at the ceremony feel about the interruption?
