Imagine being stuck on a ship in the middle of the ocean while a rare, deadly virus spreads. For weeks, passengers and crew held their breath, waiting to see who would get sick next.
WHAT HAPPENE
D
On July 2, 2026, health officials declared the outbreak officially over. Every single person who was exposed finished a 42-day watch period with no new signs of sickness.
The trouble started in early May 2026 on the MV Hondius cruise ship. The ship was traveling in the South Atlantic when people began falling ill.
In total, 13 passengers and crew members caught the Andes hantavirus. Sadly, 3 of those people died before doctors could stop the spread.

WHY IT MATTER
S
This specific virus is very scary because it is the only kind of hantavirus that can pass from person to person. Usually, humans only get hantavirus from rodents, which makes this ship outbreak rare and dangerous.
Many people online felt relieved when the news broke. Some even joked on social media that this outbreak was a "flop" compared to the COVID-19 pandemic because it was stopped so fast.
WHAT HAPPENS NEX
T
The MV Hondius can now sail without the dark cloud of the virus hanging over it. Health teams will study how the ship stopped the virus so quickly to help future ships stay safe.
WHAT WE STILL DON'T KNO
W
- How did the virus get onto the cruise ship in the first place?
- Will cruise lines change their health checks because of this scare?
- Are there any long-term health issues for the 10 people who survived the virus?
