Imagine being stuck on a ship in the middle of the ocean while a rare, deadly virus spreads. For weeks, passengers and crew held their breath, waiting to see who would get sick next.

On July 2, 2026, health officials declared the outbreak officially over. Every single person who was exposed finished a 42-day watch period with no new signs of sickness.

The trouble started in early May 2026 on the MV Hondius cruise ship. The ship was traveling in the South Atlantic when people began falling ill.

In total, 13 passengers and crew members caught the Andes hantavirus. Sadly, 3 of those people died before doctors could stop the spread.
